A Guide To Essay Writing: The Best Strategy For Beginners


When you first get to High School you may be asked to write essays for all sorts of reasons. If you have never written an essay before the prospect of writing A LOT of them may be a bit overwhelming. The good news is it does not have to be! There are some easy strategies that beginner essay writers can adopt to become better writers. These include always working from an outline, reading plenty of examples, and working in draft form. If you can master these 3 very basic essay-writing skills, your High School essay-writing career will be wonderful!

  1. Make it a rule to always work from an outline!
  2. At first working from an outline may feel like adding more work to the assignment but after awhile using an outline will actually save you time. Instead of trying to come up with ideas as you write an outline makes it easy to plan out your paper before you even begin to write. As you conduct your research, fill in an outline template using full sentences to assure that you don’t plagiarize. Then, when the time comes to write all of the points that you need are already written- all you have left to do is come up with a way to make the narrative flow together. Wow, what a time saving tool!

  3. Read plenty of essay examples
  4. If you have never even read an essay before, how are you supposed to write one? One of the best pieces of advice for beginners is to read plenty of examples that have been written at all levels. Reading examples will help to give you a better sense of how to write a great essay It will also show you the difference between a bad essay and a good one. Believe it or not, by reading the essays that others have written you’ll begin to develop your own style. This strategy will help you to become a great writer someday.

  5. Work in draft form
  6. The last piece of advice for young essay writers is to always work in draft form. Never assume that the first copy is good enough. Writing your essay in various drafts will remove the pressure to get it right the first time. Instead, you can edit and proofread your essay later on to make it better.
