The five-paragraph essay can be one of the most potent tools that you can use to showcase your academic writing skills, and here are some important points which can serve as a guide.

  • First – The first paragraph serves as the introduction for your paper. Ideally, it should be a miniature outline for your whole paper, telling the reader about what to expect in the coming few paragraphs. The main purpose of this paragraph is to arouse and hold interest for the rest of the essay. End the first paragraph with a hook- an interesting statement which transitions the reader on to the next paragraph.
  • Second – This should be the most compelling part of your paper's body. Use this paragraph to propound the strongest arguments, most intelligible illustrations and most compelling examples that you want to use to make your point. Come straight to the topic and use another hook to transition on to the third paragraph.
  • Third – This should be a natural and organic follow-up for the previous paragraph, containing the second-most important collection of points and arguments. This should serve to strengthen your statement and provide the reader with more fodder to think and reflect about your argument.
  • Fourth – The last paragraph of the body should contain those arguments which are relatively weaker, but still merit a mention. This paragraph should round off your argument and culminate into a hook which signifies the end of the body and eases the transition into the last paragraph.
  • Fifth – The final paragraph contains the conclusion- a quick summing-up of the material you have just provided. This should contain a small summary of the points you made, and a reiteration of the statement that you made in the introduction. The paper can end with a final statement or a call to action.
